Overview

The Mapp it app is a responsive web app that aims to provide a quick and easy way for students and people living in new cities to be able to find restaurants to eat at, while also offering a way to connect with the locals of that new city. This was a project that was created during my time at Careerfoundry.

Objective

To create and design a mobile experience and responsive web experience that allows users to find restaurants to eat at and allows users to find and connect with people who have similar interests in food.

Problem

It’s difficult to know where the best quality foods and highest rated restaurants are in a new city, and not everyone wants to be able to use Google because many times Google isn’t as targeted and as accurate as it could be.

Solution

Mapp It offers a solution to this problem by providing users an app that is specifically designed to locate new restaurants without the extra fluff of unrelated search results. The Mapp It app offers a concentrated experience if you’re looking for a restaurant to go to, and it even helps to mitigate the problem of not knowing anyone in that new city, by allowing users to be social on the app and connecting with other locals by gamifying the social experience.

Target User

I intended for the target user to be anyone who is between the ages of 18-40 who has access to a smartphone or internet/computer and happens to spend a lot of time away from home exploring unfamiliar places.

User Interviews

User Interview Details

There were a couple of choices I had for deciding on which user research method to use, but ultimately I decided on user interviews. The reason why I went with user interviews was because interviews would allow me to gain insights to the most well-rounded experiences of people who might enjoy trying new foods and/or using restaurant locator apps.

Example Questions

1.) What makes you choose to go to a new restaurant instead of choosing to go to a restaurant you’re already familiar with?

2.) How often do you use apps/websites to find restaurant recommendations?

3.) If you saw online or in the news that many people seem to enjoy the food from a new restaurant, what would your thoughts be on going to that restaurant as well?

User Personas

Goals

-To find communities of students her age.
-Eat food she hasn’t tried before.

Frustrations

-Doesn’t know where they all hang out.
-Very indecisive so doesn’t know where she would want to go.

Aerith is very outgoing and makes friends easily. She is studying at university abroad this semester to study on different cultures. Since she’ll be abroad for a while, she needs a way to find new restaurants easily. That way she’ll have an easy way to try new cuisine from different cultures.

Goals

-To Find new people interested in the same foods as she is.
-Learn a little about other cultural food.

Frustrations

-Doesn’t know where they all hang out.
-Very indecisive so doesn’t know where she would want to go.

As a new user, I want to have the ability to receive restaurant recommendations based on what’s close to me currently, and I want to be able to receive recommendations based on info I might have input.

Goals

-To find restaurants that serve Nigerian food.
-To find  a Nigerian community.

Frustrations

-There are not a lot of Nigerian places in his area.
-It’s difficult to connect with other Nigerians in the area because there is a small population in his city.

Zach is new to the city that he’s living in, but since he’s just moving to the city from his home country of Nigeria with his wife, he struggles to find communities of Nigerians who he can meet and connect with.

Mid-Fi Wireframes

In order to help visualize my ideas, I built a few low to mid fidelity wireframes. These helped me to solidify certain design decisions I made by allowing me to accurately build what was to me a smooth and optimal user experience when perusing a mentor app with the backing of research and competitive analyses as well.

Moodboard

I made this moodboard to help with the creative process in coming up with inspiration for my design. With this moodboard I was able to establish an idea for brand identity.

Responsive Design Mockups

Takeaways

- I will likely explore different color choices for potential future iterations.
- In future iterations, I plan to do further analysis on the effect of my color choice on user preference for my design choices.
- I should do more testing on different breakpoints as opposed to only mobile design.
