Movio

Overview

The Movio app was inspired by today’s world of streaming services and the increasing lack of ownership of media by consumers. Corporations such as Netflix as well as other well-known media giants, will always have the say-so on when to give media and when to take it away. The Movio app is an app that aims to address that issue.

Approach

I started out by thinking about what I felt like was missing as someone who really enjoys media as an artform. I realized that I wanted to have more feeling of “ownership” of the movies and shows that I  consume, and I decided that the best way to go about doing that was to design a store aimed at collectors of media.

Objective

To research and design a complete responsive web mobile as well as web experience for media collectors--- with a particular focus on movies.

Key Features

Process

Ideate

I started this project off by ideating - sketching out rough ideas for the app that I thought would be good ideas for a basic e-commerce app. I ensured the inclusion of design patterns that users would find in any standard e-commerce app and proceeded to sketch ideas for these patterns down until I eventually settled on a few that I felt were solid enough ideas. After completing the ideate phase, I then moved onto the wireframing phase.

Lo-Fi Wireframes

In the preliminary stages of preparing to build my initial lo-fi wireframes, I ensured that I had my user stories compiled. These included three things:

-Providing users recommendations of what they may want to see.

-Providing advanced filtering options for an easier time finding what users need.

-Allow users to see reviews from other people who have purchased the same product previously.

User Flow

User Testing

  • “I liked the design, but changing the font would make it easier to read.”
  • “I think visual hierarchy could be better. Kerning should be lower and font should be changed.”
  • “Was confusing to navigate. There should be a different icon for viewing full movie list instead of the hamburger icon.”

Feedback

Mid-Fi Wireframes

For my low to mid fidelity wireframes, I synthesized the user feedback I received, and was able to put that feedback into polishing and refinement. I proceeded to improve the visual hierarchy. I then changed the font into a font that was more legible for users. Following those changes, I revamped the login screen- making the username and password fields a line instead of a box; in order to give the app a sleek feel and look to it, which would help build user trust, and encourage them to continue to come back to the app.

Challenge

I think the challenge that I ran into while designing this app was that I wanted to differentiate it from the experience of just going to somewhere like Amazon or big box retail stores that sold sell physical media. I wanted to ensure Movio would be the easiest place to get physical collectible forms of media for the consumer.

Takeaways

-I would likely make several addition to this app

- I want to add the ability to pre-order certain media that has yet to be released.

-I may even adjust the overall design, in a future iteration, to feel less like a cinema ticket selling app, and more like an e-commerce app.
